On September 12, 1893, the First Presbyterian Church of Avonmore was organized, just five months after the borough of Avonmore was incorporated. The organization was effected in the Lutheran Church of Avonmore. There were eighteen original charter members.
They met with a committee from the Blairsville Presbytery to organize the Avonmore Presbyterian Church. Within a year of the church’s founding, the congregation of forty-six began a campaign to construct a permanent house of worship. The wood frame structure, located at 600 Indiana Avenue, was dedicated on June 6, 1895. In 1929, minor changes were made to the entry. The present structure’s cornerstone was placed on June 5, 1950 with the completed structure dedicated on June 1, 1952.
In 1993, as part of the Centennial celebration, a new entry was added to the structure making it more accessible. A restroom on the sanctuary level was incorporated into the new addition and in 2001; three classrooms and a storage area were added by the men of the congregation to the Fellowship Hall basement level.
Music has been a significant part of the ministry of the Avonmore Church. The congregation has been blessed with nineteen skilled musicians who have served as pianists, organists, choir directors, and substitutes. Through the years many members have given of their time and talents to both the voice choir and bell choirs.
Christian Education has been a focus as well. Many young people have attended Sunday school and Vacation Bible School thorough the years. The FPC of Avonmore adults have taught the youth and also participated in their own classes.
The current dedicated members are proud of their heritage and their hope is for the church and its ministry to continue for many more years to come.
